Fused Spurs

A fused spur, also known as a fused connection unit (FCU), is an electrical device used to provide a safe and convenient method of connecting and isolating electrical appliances in Australia. It combines a switch with a built-in fuse to protect the connected circuit from overloads and short circuits.

In Australia, fused spurs are commonly installed for connecting fixed appliances such as ovens, cooktops, and extractor fans. They are designed to be mounted on a wall and include a switch for isolating the appliance, as well as a fuse that provides protection by breaking the circuit if excessive current flows.

Fused spurs typically have a 13A fuse rating, which is standard for domestic installations. They are compliant with the AS/NZS 3132 standard, which specifies the requirements for electrical installations, including safety measures and installation practices. The fuse in a fused spur is usually a cartridge type, which can be easily replaced if it blows.

The use of fused spurs ensures that appliances are protected from electrical faults and allows for safe maintenance or replacement. Proper installation by a licensed electrician is crucial to ensure compliance with Australian wiring regulations and to maintain electrical safety in the home or business.
